Frequently asked questions
Which languages are available?
English, Spanish, French, and German are available. The compressed trained-data file downloaded on first use is about 2.95 MB for English, 2.10 MB for Spanish, 0.71 MB for French, and 1.33 MB for German.
Does OCR upload my document?
No. Your document is processed in your browser. The OCR engine and selected language data are downloaded from their package CDN; your document is not sent with those requests.
What is a searchable PDF?
It keeps a page image and adds an invisible text layer recognized by OCR, so text can be selected and searched. Recognition can contain errors.
Why is there a warning for phones and tablets?
The engine and selected language data need a one-time download. The language data ranges from about 0.71 MB to 2.95 MB, and recognition also uses memory and battery. A stable connection and a device with available memory are recommended.
Can OCR recognize handwriting?
The selected models are intended for printed text. Handwriting, low contrast, skew, and unusual fonts can reduce accuracy.
