File ICU is a collection of free online tools for everyday file and text tasks.

What File ICU does

File ICU offers 81 tools in five areas. Pick a tool, add your file or text, and download or copy the result. There is no account to create.

  • PDF (27 tools): merge, split, compress, sign, edit and convert PDFs.
  • Image (10 tools): compress, resize, crop and convert images.
  • Text (13 tools): count, clean, compare and transform text.
  • Developer (16 tools): format and convert JSON, CSV, YAML, XML and more.
  • Calculators & Generators (15 tools): calculators, timers, QR codes and passwords.

Features

  • Free to use, with no sign-up. The site may show advertising if you allow it in your cookie settings.
  • Browser-based processing for every current tool, using your browser and background Web Workers.
  • Batch and download options on many tools, such as ZIP downloads for several images or PDF pages.
  • Related-tool suggestions so you can move from one step to the next, for example from merging PDFs to compressing them.
  • Keyboard-friendly pages with visible focus indicators and responsive layouts for phones and desktops.

How your files are processed

Tools can work in one of two ways: client-side, where your browser does the work and the file is not uploaded by the tool, or server-side, where the file is uploaded to a server for processing.

Today every tool in the catalog is client-side. When you add a file, your browser reads it from your device, a Web Worker processes it in memory, and the result is offered as a download or shown on the page. File ICU does not receive the file, so it cannot keep a copy. Your browser holds the data in memory while a tool runs; how long that memory is kept is up to your browser and device.

There are a few related network requests, listed below: some tools download code or data they need, the optional analytics and advertising features load third-party scripts only after you consent, and the contact form sends what you type to File ICU.

Tools with extra network activity

These tools still process your input in your browser, but involve a related network request worth knowing about:

  • OCR PDF and Image to Text: Your file is read in your browser. On first use the browser downloads the OCR engine and the selected language data from the jsDelivr CDN (cdn.jsdelivr.net). Your file is not part of those requests, but jsDelivr receives ordinary request data such as your IP address.
  • Text to Speech: Text is passed to your browser’s speech synthesis. Some browsers and operating systems provide network-based voices; if your device uses one, your browser may send the text to that voice provider. File ICU does not receive it.

What we do not promise

Processing in your browser keeps your files from being sent to File ICU, but it cannot protect against malware, browser extensions, or other people with access to your device. Results are provided as is; check important documents before you rely on them. See the Terms of Service.
