Frequently asked questions

Which image formats can I use?

JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP and GIF images up to 25 MB. For a scanned PDF, use OCR PDF instead.

Do I need to choose the language?

No. The tool reads the image, detects whether the text is English, French, Spanish, German, Arabic or Urdu, and uses the matching recognition model.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is processed in your browser. Only the OCR engine and language data are downloaded from this website, once, and then kept in your browser.

How can I get better results?

Use a sharp, well-lit image with straight lines of printed text. Crop away unrelated areas and avoid very small text. Handwriting is not recognized reliably.

Can it read Arabic and Urdu?

Yes. Clean Naskh print works best. Nastaliq, which most printed Urdu uses, and low-resolution images produce more errors, so check the result.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The first run downloads a few megabytes of engine and language data, and recognition uses memory and battery, so a stable connection helps.
